After flogging the latest M3 on track at BMW’s M School and around the countryside, I have enormous respect for the car. It really is fantastic to drive - a stylish and luxurious automobile with the power and agility of a cheetah.
On the other hand, the Ford Mustang has long appealed to a completely different audience - younger maybe, and certainly more middle-class. But last year the car was endowed with a completely revised suspension, and for 2011 it receives an enormous boost in power and torque. The result is that the performance figures for the new Mustang GT posts threaten those of the M3 - for about half the price.
On paper, at least, the cars are near equals. I’m sure that I was not alone in being surprised that they were also nearly dead even on the track in the hands of Randy Pobst:
